The Washington Capitals’ Henrich Zetterburg scored a goal with 6:46 remaining to beat the New Jersey Devils 4-3 on Sunday, giving the Capitals a 3-2 lead in their playoff series against the St. Louis Blues.
The Capitals will take on the Blues in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs on Wednesday night in Nashville.
The series is tied 1-1.
The Stars had won four straight games and 10 of 11 in regulation before losing 2-1 in overtime to the Nashville Predators.
Stars defenseman Ryan Garbutt scored the game-winner with 1:06 remaining to put the Stars up 3-0.
Jaromir Jagr scored twice for the Stars.
“It was a little bit of a wild game for sure, but we played a good game,” defenseman Stephen Johns said.
“They did a great job controlling the game.”
Jagr scored his third goal of the season with 3:55 remaining in the second period, his second of the series.
The Predators opened the scoring on a goal by Andrew Ference with 2:16 remaining.
The Stars answered with a power play goal by defenseman Alex Goligoski with 1.9 seconds remaining to tie the game at 1.
The Blues scored twice in the third period to take a 3.0-1 lead.
The Devils took a 3 2-0 lead on a power-play goal by Keith Ballard.
Jagrs goal in the final period was the only goal the Stars scored during the period.
The Devils made the playoffs last season for the first time in franchise history, but have struggled since their return to the NHL.
